How to Calculate Chmod Permissions?

1
Step 1

Select read (r), write (w), and execute (x) permissions for Owner, Group, and Others.

2
Step 2

Inspect the calculated 3 or 4-digit octal value (e.g. 755) and symbolic notation (-rwxr-xr-x) in real time.

3
Step 3

Optionally type an octal number or symbolic string directly to update checkboxes automatically.

4
Step 4

Copy the generated 'chmod' command and paste it into your terminal.

Chmod & Permissions FAQ

What do the chmod numbers (4, 2, 1) mean?

Read = 4, Write = 2, Execute = 1. Combining permissions adds these numbers together; for example, Read (4) + Execute (1) = 5.

Why are 755 and 644 the web standard?

644 (rw-r--r--) allows only the owner to modify files while others can read. 755 (rwxr-xr-x) adds execute permission needed for directories to be entered or scripts to be run.
